Combining Western Herbs and Chinese Medicine September 2006 Jeremy Ross has practiced acupuncture and herbal medicine, in both England and USA, since 1977. He teaches in both Europe and North America, sharing both his great theoretical knowledge and his long practical experience. Originally trained as a biologist he specialized in plant physiology and biochemistry. A member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists he is a graduate of both the Chinese and Western systems of herbal medicine and for 15 years, has specialized in developing a new integrated system of herb combination that brings together concepts from Western herbal traditions, Chinese medicine, and phytopharmacology.
He has authored a number of seminal texts including Zang Fu: The Organ Systems of Chinese Medicine, 1986, Acupuncture Point Combinations: The Key to Clinical Success, 1995 and more recently Combining Western Herbs and Chinese Medicine 2003, a work of one thousand pages and 150 herb combinations.
Jeremy Ross will give a two day workshop on Herb Tasting to treat disease and Treating the Side effects of Drugs with herbs. Jeremy Ross is at the forefront of the development of a new integrated system that incorporates concepts from the western herbal tradition, Chinese medicine, and modern pharmacological and clinical research. The Herb Tasting workshop presents a new expanded concept of the taste properties of herbs to treat the new patterns of disease in modern society. The second day will look at the side-effects of some commonly used conventional drugs. These will be classified into Chinese syndrome groups. Western herb combinations will be given to treat these drug side effects in terms of Chinese medicine so that practitioners can immediately use these combinations in clinical practice.

It is aimed at Therapeutic Bodyworkers of all genres, Acupuncturists, Herbalists, Homeopaths, Cranial therapists etc. Michael has been a teacher and practitioner of Therapeutic Bodywork, Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong for over fourteen years and during this period he has taught and lectured in the UK, Europe, China and Ireland. Focusing on the HNS we will look at movement and functionality in the musculo-skeletal and myofascial relationships inherent in this system. In this interactive workshop students will be brought through the basics of the technique of releasing the neck, with particular attention being paid to reflective processes in practice, centering and grounding techniques, palpatory literacy in practice, the breathing wave, the axis of movement, resitance, ‘bind’, and release. Dr. Raphael Nogier Raphael Nogier Brochure Nogier Method - Ear Acupuncture Workshop 24/25th March 2007. Dublin
Nogier Auricular therapy, also known as Ear Acupuncture is a medical technique developed and studied since the 1950’s. The technique works on the neurological properties of the ear. In the ear speculum there is a series of points called "neurovascular complexes" which are linked to the central nervous system, in turn linked to the different organs of the body. When an organ is sick, painful points will appear on the ear. The points are detectable with a pressure tester or using an electric detector. The detection of the points allows a diagnosis and also means that the pain and therefore the functional pathologies can be treated. The standardisation of the nomenclature of ear acupuncture was carried out in Lyon by a working group, set up by the World Health Organisation in 1990 and chaired by Doctor Nogier. Some of the indications for Auricular Therapy are:smoking Addiction, Pain-sciatica, shoulder pain, trigeminal neuralgia, etc., diarrhoea, constipation, migraines, etc. ,some mood disorders: neuroses, depression.

Sept.’07
Dr.Birch is coming to Dublin in September to give a workshop on Paediatric Acupuncture. Paediatric Acupuncture can be used to treat many chronic and acute conditions commonly found in children: Earache, headache, fevers, allergies and asthma; digestive problems in newborns including colic, diarrhea, and abdominal pain; muloskeletal pain and trauma; nightmares and sleep problems, and bedwetting. Combined with diet it can also be used to treat ADD and ADHD. Generally children do not like being needled. Recognising this fact paediatric acupuncture therapy has developed specialised treatment techniques many of which are non-invasive and thus not uncomfortable or frightening to the child.
Specialised instruments have been developed, and great care has been taken in adapting the use of acupuncture and related techniques for the treatment of children. The standard filiform acupuncture needle, the Hao Zhen, is only one of nine historical metal needles described in the Ling Shu chapters of the Huang di Nei Jing (c.-200 b.c.e).
Typically these non-standard needles (with blunt or rounded points) are not inserted, but instead may be either held close to the acupuncture point, or brushed gently along the acupuncture pathways over the body using Pressing, Rolling, and Tapping techniques. This makes it a very gentle and relaxing experience for the child and for the parent.
Dr Birch is the leading teacher of shonishin in Europe and has studied the method with its founder Yoshio Manaka in Japan. He is the author of several books and scientific papers on oriental medicine and leads the charge in Europe in respect of Acupuncture research. His books include “Japanese Acupuncture: A Clinical Guide.” Which he has co-written with Junko Ida. He has written “Hara Diagnosis-Reflections on the Sea” and “Extroardinary Vessels” with Kiiko Matsumoto. He has also written “Understanding Acupuncture” with Robert Felt” and “Chasing the Dragons Tail” with Yoshio Manaka. These books have become classics of oriental medicine. The method they teach is suitable for most patients, especially those who prefer not to feel needles.
The workshop will be taught in a hands on approach to facilitate learning the basic system.
